The objectives of this research are to find out the correlation between (1) grammar mastery and speaking skill; (2) self-confidence and speaking skill; and (3) grammar mastery and self-confidence simultaneously and speaking skill.
The research used correlational method. The research was carried out from January to June 2013 at English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University. The population was all of the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University which consisted of 92 students. The questionnaire was used to obtain the self-confidence data, the written test (multiple choice test) was used to obtain the grammar mastery data, and the oral test (role play) was used to obtain the speaking skill data. The techniques used to analyze the data were Regression and Correlation (both simple and multiple).
The result of the data analysis shows that at the significance level a=0.05 (1) there is a positive correlation between grammar mastery and speaking skill ( (0.9815) > (0.361); (2) there is a positive correlation between self-confidence and speaking skill ( (0.9601) > (0.361)); and (3) there is a positive correlation between grammar mastery and self-confidence simultaneously and speaking skill ( = 0.9824, = 0.9651, and = 373.04 > = 3.35). Besides, the result of the research shows that the contribution of grammar mastery to speaking skill is 80.84%, self-confidence to speaking skill is 15.67%, and grammar mastery and self-confidence simultaneously to speaking skill is 96.51%. It means that 96.51% of speaking skill is determined by grammar mastery and self-confidence.
From the data above, it can be concluded that grammar mastery and speaking skill are important factors in giving contribution to speaking skill. Therefore, grammar mastery and self-confidence should be considered in increasing speaking skill.
