This objective of this research is to identify whether: (1) Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) is more effective than Direct Instruction (DI) to teach reading manual text at the Eleventh Grade students of Light Vehicle of SMKN 2 Sampit in the Academic Year of 2012/2013; (2) the students who have high reading interest have better reading comprehension ability than those who have low reading interest; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and reading interest for teaching reading manual text.
The method which was applied in this research was experimental study which conducted at SMKN 2 Sampit. The population of the research is the eleventh grade students of Light Vehicle of SMKN 2 Sampit in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. A total sampling was used. The class XI TKR2 was as the experimental class taught by using CORI and class XI TKR1 as the control class taught by using DI. Each of classes consists of 26 students. The data were obtained from reading interest’s questionnaires and reading test. Furthermore, to analyse the data, the researcher applied descriptive and inferential statistics using ANOVA and Tukey test.
Based on the results of the analysis, the research findings that can be taken: (1) CORI method is more effective than DI method to teach reading manual text; (2) The students who have high reading interest have better reading comprehension ability than those who have low reading interest; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and reading interest in teaching reading manual text for the Eleventh Grade Students of Light Vehicle of SMKN 2 Sampit in the Academic Year of 2012/2013.
The result of this study implies that: (1) The teacher is suggested to implement CORI to teach reading manual text in order that the students’ reading comprehension ability is better; (2) CORI is suitable for students having high reading interest, whereas DI is for those who have low reading interest; and (3) The other researchers can also develop the methods used in this research as a way of making revision to the weaknesses of this research.
