Correlation between habit in listening to english songs and vocabulary mastery to writing skill (A Correlational Study of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA N 1 Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)

The objectives of this research are to find out whether there is a correlation between (1) student‘s habit in listening to English songs and writing skill; (2) student‘s vocabulary mastery and writing skill; and (3) student‘s habit in listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery toward writing skill. The study uses descriptive research method, with category of correlational study. The study was carried out from April to May 2013 at SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta. The population is all of the tenth grade regular students of SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta which consists of ten classes. The total number of the students is 320 students. The sample is 32 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data are questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to collect the data of student‘s habit in listening to English songs; while the objective test is used to collect the data of students‘ vocabulary mastery; and the essay test is used to collect the data of student‘s writing skill. The techniques used to analyze the data are Simple Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation. The result of the data analysis shows that in the level of significance a = 0.05 (1) there is a positive correlation between student‘s habit in listening to English songs and writing skill (rx1y = 0.624 > rt = 0.349); (2) there is a positive correlation between student‘s vocabulary mastery and writing skill (rx2y = 0.449 > rt = 0.349); and (3) there is positive correlation between student‘s habit in listening to English songs, vocabulary mastery, and writing skill (Ry12 = 0.64 and Fo = 9.81 > Ft = 3.33). The result of this research shows that habit in listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery are important factors that give contribution to student‘s writing skill. The students‘ habit in listening to English songs has 38.94% contribution to the students‘ writing skill, and the students‘ vocabulary mastery has 20.23% contribution to the students‘ writing skill. While simultaneously, the students‘ habit in listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery have 40.36 % contribution to the students‘ writing skill. It means that the increasing of students‘ habit in listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery, either separately or simultaneously, will be followed by the increasing of the students‘ writing skill.
