This research is intended to reveal three important things: (1) whether Total Physical Response is more effective than Audio lingual Method in teaching listening for the first grade of SMKN 2 Sragen in the Academic Year of 2010/2011; (2) whether the students who have high interest have better listening ability than those who have low interest; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ interest in teaching listening.
The research method is an experimental study. There are two kinds of teaching methods used in this research: Total Physical Response and Audio Lingual Method. The interest as an attributive variable is divided into high and low. This research was conducted in SMKN 2 Sragen. The population of this research was the first grade students of SMKN 2 Sragen in the academic year of 2010/2011. The samples are X TKR1 students for an experimental group and X TKR3 students for a control group. The writer used cluster random sampling to get the sample. There were 64 students equally distributed into four groups. The techniques of collecting the data were non test (a questionnaire) and a test (a listening test). The questionnaire consisted of 40 items and a multiple choice test of listening test. The data were the result of listening test and analyzed by multifactor analysis of variance 2 x 2. Ho is rejected if Fo is higher than Ft. Then, it was analyzed by using Tukey test.
Based on the result of data analysis, there are some research findings: (1) Total Physical Response is more effective than Audio lingual Method to teach listening to the first grade students of SMKN 2 Sragen in the academic year of 2010/2011; (2) The students who have high interest have better listening ability than the students who have low interest of the first grade students of SMKN 2 Sragen in the academic year of 2010/2011; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ interest in teaching listening to the first grade students of SMKN 2 Sragen in the academic year of 2010/2011.
The research shows that the effect of teaching method depends on the degree of interest. Total Physical Response is more effective than Audio lingual Method to teach listening to the students who have high interest. Audio lingual Method is more effective than Total Physical Response to teach listening to the students who have low interest. Hopefully, the result of this research is useful and recommended for teachers in order to choose and determine the teaching method used in their class.
Key Words: Total Physical Response, Audio Lingual Method, listening ability, interest and experimental study.
