This research aims at finding out whether: (1) circle the sage is more effective than direct instruction in teaching speaking for the eleventh grade students of SMK Batur Jaya 1 Ceper Klaten in the academic year of 2013/2014; (2) the eleventh grade students who have high self-confidence have better speaking skill than those who have low self-confidence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and students’ self-confidence to teach speaking. The teaching technique which employed in this research was an experimental study. The population of the research was the eleventh grade students of SMK Batur Jaya 1 Ceper Klaten in the academic year of 2013/2014. The two samples were taken by using cluster random sampling. The sample in this research was two classes; one class (XI TKR C) consisting 38 students as the experimental class and one class (XI TKR A) consisting 38 students as the control class. The research instruments consist of self-confidence questionnaire and speaking test which are designed by the researcher. In collecting the data, the researcher made some steps: (1) conducting self-confidence questionnaire to know the students’ level of self-confidence; (2) applying teaching techniques to the students in eight meetings; (3) giving post-test to the students; and (4) analyzing the students’ speaking skills. The data were obtained from self-confidence and speaking test. They were analyzed in the terms of their frequency distribution, normality of the sample distribution, and the data homogeneity and then used ANOVA test (Multifactor Analysis and Variance) and TUKEY test to test the research hypotheses. The result of the research findings leads to the conclusion that: (1) circle the sage is more effective than direct instruction for teaching speaking in the eleventh grade students of SMK Batur Jaya 1 Ceper Klaten in the academic year of 2013/2014; (2) the students who have high self-confidence have better speaking skill than those who have low self-confidence; (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and the students’ self-confidence to teach speaking. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the use of circle the sage is effective to teach speaking for the eleventh grade students at SMK Batur Jaya 1 Ceper Klaten in the academic year of 2013/2014. Therefore, it is recommended that: (1) teachers apply circle the sage to teach speaking; (2) teachers use more innovative teaching materials to improve students’ speaking skill; and (3) future researchers can use this research as a reference for future research.
