Improving The Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Using Word Games (A Classroom Action Research at the Fifth Grade of SD Negeri 01 Gondangmanis in the Academic Year 2012/2013)

This research aims to: 1) investigate whether word games can improve students‟ vocabulary mastery and its extent of enhancement; 2) describe classroom climate when word games are implemented in teaching vocabulary.
The method used in this research was action research. The research was conducted in two cycles at the fifth grade of SD Negeri 01 Gondangmanis from April-June 2013. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, interview, and test (pre-test and post-test). The qualitative data were analyzed by using constant comparative method which is consisted of five stages: assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data, the result of pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using descriptive statistic analysis.
The research finding shows that the implementation of word games could improve the students‟ vocabulary mastery and classroom climates. The improvement of students‟ vocabulary mastery includes: 1) students could identify and remember the meaning of the word easily; 2) students were able to spell the word correctly; 3) students could pronounce the word correctly and clearly; 4) students were able to make a good simple sentence. Besides, the improvement of classroom climate include: 1) the students gave their full attention during teaching learning process without doing improper activities; 2) most of students were confident to answer the teacher‟s question orally or by writing it on the whiteboard; 3) the interaction between students improved significantly.
It can be concluded that the implementation of word games can improve the students‟ vocabulary mastery and classroom situation. It is hoped that this result can give other teachers inspiration to implement word games in their classroom.
