The efffectiveness of Think-Pair-Share (TPS) to Teach Writing Viewed From Students Creativity

This research aims at finding out: (1) whether or not Think Pair Share is more effective than Direct Method in teaching writing; (2) whether the students who have high creativity have better writing skill than those who have low creativity; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and students‟ creativity to teach writing. This experimental research was carried out in SMPN 2 Cepu in the academic year of 2012/2013 from August to October 2012. The population was the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Cepu in the academic year of 2012/ 2013. There are seven classes, and the number of all eighth graders is 210 students. The samples, which were selected by using cluster random sampling, were 8F as the experimental group and 8E as the control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. The experimental group was treated by using Think Pair Share, while the control group was treated by using Direct Method. Before collecting the data, the researcher conducted creativity test to the both groups to know students‟ level of creativity. Before the creativity test was examined to both of control and experimental groups, the researcher tried it out to non-sample class. This was done to know the read skill of the instructions of the creativity test. At last, the researcher conducted a post-test to the two groups. The post-test was writing test. Before the writing test was tested to both groups, it was firstly tried out to non-sample class. This was done to know the read skill of the instruction in the writing test. Then, the data from the post-test were described using descriptive statistics and were tested their normality and homogeneity. It was found that the data were in normal distribution and homogeneous. After that, the data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test. The data analysis shows the following findings: (1) Think Pair Share is more effective than Direct Method in teaching writing; (2) students with high creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and creativity in teaching writing. Based on the research findings, the conclusion of this research is that Think Pair Share is an effective technique in teaching writing. Therefore, it is recommended that: (1) teachers should apply Think Pair Share to make students enjoy their learning in the classroom; (2) the students need to be actively involved in the learning activities in the classroom, asking questions, reading books, or learning from other learning sources; and (3) future researchers may conduct the same kind of research with different sample and condition.
