Improving Students’ Speaking Skill By Using Team Game Tournament (Tgt) (An Action Research Of The Eleventh Grade Students Of Tourism 3 At Smk Negeri 6 Surakarta In The Academic Year Of 2009/2010)

This research aims to: (1) find out whether Team Game Tournament (TGT) can improve the students’ speaking skill.(2) describe the teaching and learning condition when Team Game Tournament (TGT) was implemented to improve the students’ speaking skill. This research belongs to Classroom Action Research which consists of two cycles. Each cycle has four steps namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. This research was carried out at SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta from June to July 2010. The subject of the research is twelfth year students of Tourism Department (Class XI Tourism 3) in the year of 2009/2010. The data was obtained from observation before action, interviewing, observation of action, test, questionnaires, and documentation. The technique of analyzing data used are data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification for the qualitative data, and descriptive analysis for quantitative data The research findings are : (1) the implementation of Team Game Tournament (TGT) in the teaching and learning process can improve the students’ speaking skill. This is proven by seeing the result of the students’ average score before and after the implementation of Team Game Tournament (TGT) in the teaching and learning process in Cycle I and Cycle II. The students’ average score of the pre-test is 4.79, the post-test of Cycle I is 6.74, and the post-test of Cycle II is 7.65. The students with the score of ≥ 65 of pre-test are 9 students or 28.1%, of post-test of Cycle I are 24 students or 75%, of post-test of Cycle II are 30 students or 93.75%. (2) the teaching and learning condition when Team Game Tournament (TGT) was implemented to improve the students’ speaking skill in Cycle I and Cycle II improves better. The number of the students who are active during the teaching-learning process improves. In the Meeting 1 of Cycle I, 18 students or 56.3%, in the Meeting 2 of Cycle I, 25 students or 78.1%, in the Meeting 3 of Cycle I, 28 students or 87.5%, in the Meeting 1 of Cycle II, 30 students or 93.8%, in the Meeting 2 of Cycle II, 32 students or 100%, in the Meeting 3 of Cycle II, 32 students or 100%. Team Game Tournament can improve the students’ speaking skill significantly. Team Game Tournament (TGT) can also improve the teaching and learning process and change it from unconducive to be conducive. The teaching and learning condition during the implementation of TGT in the speaking class improves significantly which can be shown with the improvement of the effectiveness and efficiency in the teaching-learning, the improvement of students’ involvement, self-esteem, motivation, social relationships and behavior, responsibility, interactions, knowledge, and psychological health. TGT is suggested to be applied by the teacher, students, school, and other researchers.
