Implementing Esa (Engage-Study-Activate) Technique To Improve Students’ Listening Ability (A Classroom Action Research At The Tenth Grade Students Of Sma Negeri 1 Kebakkramat In The Academic Year 2012/2013)

This thesis is compossed based on the result of Action Research and the researcher’s experiences during conducting research study for a month in SMA N 1 Kebakkramat, Karanganyar. This research has objectives to know whether ESA Technique can improve the students’ listening ability and to know what happens when ESA Technique is implemented in teaching listening in the classroom. The research was conducted from 1 May until 31 May 2013 consisiting of two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings. Every cycle consist of four steps: planning, implementing, observation and reflection. The researcher collected the data by using qualitative and quantitative technique. The qualitative technique consists of assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2. Based on all the data collected as the research findings, it can be shown that ESA Technique enhance the students’ listening ability and the classroom atmosphere in teaching and learning listening activity. The improvement shown by the students are: they can understand word meaning, detail information, main idea, text purpose, and references. As the result, the students’ mean score improved: pretest (59); post-test 1 (68); post-test 2 (77). The improvement of classroom atmosphere was also gained among other things are students were motivated and interested in learning Listening in the class, they were focused and not noisy during teaching learning English process in the class, and they tended to be active learner and dare learner. This research result shows there are improvements in students’ listening ability and situation of the class. Based on that reason, it is recommended that the English teacher implement suitable techniques to his or her class and one of them is ESA Technique which has been proved and tested to improve students’ listening ability.
