This thesis aims to describe (1) whether and to what extent the
implementation of Group Investigation can improve students writing skill in
developing content of analytical exposition text; (2) whether and to what extent
the implementation of Group Investigation can improve the classroom climate;
and (3) the strengths and weaknesses of Group Investigation when it is
implemented to teach writing.
This action research study is carried out collaboratively with one of the
English teachers of SMA Negeri 4 Madiun, in class XI IPA 1. The research is
carried out in 3 cycles. Every cycle consists of four steps: planning, implementing,
observing, and reflecting. The qualitative data are collected by using techniques of
observation, interview, documentation, questionnaire, while quantitative data are
collected by using test (pre-test and post-test). The qualitative data are analyzed
through descriptive analysis which consists of assembling the data, coding the
data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting the outcomes. The
quantitative data are analyzed through descriptive statistics.
The research findings show that Group Investigation can improve
students’ writing skill in developing content of analytical exposition text and
classroom climate. Related to the improvement of content development, it
includes: (1) all students state their thesis clearly within the composition.; (2)
students write in a longer paragraph and are able to produce better detail
information; (3) the quality of the text is better, students add experience,
illustration, facts, opinion in their text; (4) students use description, cause/effect,
comparison/contrast to explain the arguments; (5) the compositions are written
more focusly. The students’ mean score of content development improved from
13.68 to 22.95 in the end of cycle 3. The mean score of writing also improves
from 61.6 to 80.7. Meanwhile, the improvement of classroom climate is indicated
from: (1) writing activities are not so monotonous and more challenging; (2) the
class is becoming an active class ; and (3) the students are able to cooperate well
with their group.
In conclusion, the implementation of Group Investigation can improve
the students’ writing skill in developing content of analytical exposition text and
the situation in writing class. Group Investigation is a teaching method that gives
benefits for both the students’ achievement and the students’ learning interest.
