Using Videos To Improve Students’ Speaking Ability (A Classroom Action Research In The Sixth Grade Students Of Sd Negeri 2 Canden In Academic Year Of 2012/2013)

The objectives of the research are to find out whether video can improve the students’ speaking ability and the effectiveness of using video in teaching speaking to the sixth grade students of SD Negeri 2 Canden in academic year of 2012/2013. Classroom action research was used in the research. The action research was conducted from October 29th 2012 to December 17th 2012 and carried out in two cycles; each cycle consisted of three meetings. There were two kinds of data that the researcher collected, i.e. qualitative and quantitative data. To collect the qualitative data, the researcher used questionaire, observations, interview, documents analysis, and photographs. In collecting the quantitative data, the researcher used two tests, the pre-test and post-test. Both the qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed to answer the problem statements stated above. The result of the research shows that use of videos could improve the students’ speaking ability and the teaching effectiveness. The improvement of the students’ ability in speaking can be seen from the test score. The mean score of the test result is 44.5 for pre-test, 59.1 for post-test 1, and 72.3 for post-test 2. The improvements include the abilities in accuracy and fluency. Related to the teaching effectiveness, the improvements include the students: 1) become more interested in following the English lesson, 2) were more motivated in the teaching and learning process, and 3) were more active to participate in the classroom activity.
