This research aims at revealing empirically whether: (1) RAFT is more effective than guided writing to teach writing for the third semester students of English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the academic year of 2013/2014; (2) students having high creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) There is an interaction effect between teaching techniques and students’ creativity on students’ writing skill. The population of this experimental research is third semester students. Two samples are taken by using cluster random sampling. Class 3D is the experimental class and class 3C becomes the control class. Each consists of 24 students. The research instruments are creativity test and writing test. To collect the data, the researcher carried out the following steps: (1) administering creativity test to know student’s creativity level; (2) applying teaching techniques to the students; (3) administering writing post-test; (4) analyzing the students’ writing scores. Data analysis includes descriptive and inferential statistics using ANOVA and Tukey test. Research findings confirm that: (1) students taught using RAFT have better writing skill than those who are taught using guided writing. In other words, RAFT is more effective than guided writing; (2) students having high creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) There is an interaction effect between teaching techniques and students’ creativity on students’ writing skill which means that RAFT best suits students having high creativity, and guided writing is more appropriate for students having low creativity. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that RAFT is an effective technique to teach writing. Thus, employing RAFT to teach writing is recommended. As students with high creativity show better writing skill, teacher needs to boost the creativity potential within students with low creativity. The interaction between teaching techniques and students’ creativity helps teacher determine the use of teaching technique based on students’ creativity level. Employing appropriate technique will is crucial to reach the intended teaching goals.
