A correlational study between habit in watching cartoon films, lexical meaning mastery, and reading skill of the eleventh grade students of sma negeri 2 Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/2014

This study is aimed to find out the correlation between: (1) habit in watching cartoon films and reading skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/ 2014; (2) lexical meaning mastery and reading skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/ 2014; and (3) habit in watching cartoon films and lexical meaning mastery simultaneously and reading skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/ 2014. The study belongs to a correlational study. The population was all of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/ 2014. The sample was 35 students that were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used to collect the data were tests and questionnaire. The tests were used to collect the data of lexical meaning mastery and reading skill, while the questionnaire was used to collect the data of habit in watching cartoon films. The techniques used to analyze the data were Simple and Multiple Linear Regression and Correlation. The results of the study show that (1) there is a positive correlation between students’ habit in watching cartoon films and students’ reading skill; (2) there is a positive correlation between students’ lexical meaning mastery and students’ reading skill; (3) there is a positive correlation between students’ habit in watching cartoon films and lexical meaning mastery simultaneously and students’ reading skill. Furthermore, the results show that 90.25% variance of reading skill is determined by habit in watching cartoon films, while 96.04% variance of which is determined by lexical meaning mastery, and 97% variance of which is determined by habit in watching cartoon films and lexical meaning mastery simultaneously. With regard to the results of the study, it can be concluded that positive correlation between habit in watching cartoon films and lexical meaning mastery and reading skill indicates that both habit in watching cartoon films and lexical meaning mastery are able to support and ultimately give contribution to reading skill. Hence, students’ habit in watching cartoon films and lexical meaning mastery need to be considered in the teaching and learning activities of reading for more variations.
