A speech act analysis of directive expressions in the film entitled

ABSTRACT The research is aimed at finding out the kinds of directives expressions and the forms in expressing directives which occur in the film entitled “Sweet November”. A descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research. It employs total sampling as the technique for choosing sample. The source of the data was the film entitled “Sweet November”, while the data itself were all utterances of directives expressions spoken among the characters of the film. Through the analysis, 61 data were obtained, the data were classified by using Allan’s classification of directives and Quirk’s of classification of sentences. The result of the research shows that (1) there are four types of directives applied in the film namely requestives, questions, requirements, and prohibitives (2) it is found that there are four forms of sentences in expressing directives namely imperative, declarative interrogative and mixed form. After analyzing the data, the writer concluded that learning directive expressions is quite important. It helps the English language learners to develop their communication skill. Then, it is suggested for other researchers who have an interest in the same research to find other resources beside film as the object.
