The effectiveness of visual media in teaching vocabulary for elementary school students viewed from students’ intelligence (An Experimental Research in the Sixth Grade of SDN Gupit 02 and Kedungwinong 01 in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is: (1) to reveal whether Visual media is more effective than Audio media to teach vocabulary; (2) to reveal whether high intelligence students have better vocabulary mastery than low intelligence students; and (3) to reveal whether there is interaction between the teaching media and students? intelligence in teaching vocabulary to the sixth grade of SDN Gupit 02 and SDN Kedungwinong 01 in the academic year of 2013/2014. The research was conducted at SDN Gupit 02 and SDN Kedungwinong 01 in the academic year of 2013/2014 from August to September. The population is the sixth grade of SDN Gupit 02 and SDN Kedungwinong 01. The total number of population is 36 students coming from two classes. The sampling of the research is total sampling so the population is the sample. It is because the population is less than 100 students. The sample is the sixth grade of SDN Gupit 02 as the experimental group and the sixth grade of SDN Kedungwinong 01 as the control group. Each consists of 18 students. The writer used normality test, homogeneity test in order to check whether or not the two groups were in normal distribution and homogeneous. The research analysis used is ANOVA and Tukey. The findings of this research show: (1) Visual media is more effective than Audio media to teach vocabulary; (2) The students having high intelligence have better vocabulary mastery than those having low creativity and (3) There is an interaction between teaching media and students? intelligence to teach vocabulary. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Visual media is more effective than Audio media in teaching vocabulary. The findings of this research prove that teaching media has a strong influence on students? vocabulary mastery. The teachers are suggested to use appropriate media by considering students? intelligence. Key words: vocabulary, visual media, audio media, intelligence, experimental studies
