Improving Students` Grammar Mastery By Puzzles In Communicative Language Teaching An Action Research At SMPN 2 Srandakan

This research was aimed to find out whether the puzzles could be used to improve students’ grammar mastery. It was focussed on the improving students’ grammar mastery by puzzles. The observation and interview showed that the students still confused in using grammatical rules. It indicated that students` grammar mastery was low. The researcher chose puzzle as the teaching aid to improve students’ grammar mastery. This research was conducted as a classroom action research. The participants of the research were 8A students of SMPN 2 Srandakan. It was conducted from February 2006 to April 2006.There were three cycles in this research. Every cycle consist of identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing, observing and monitoring the action, evaluating and reflecting the result of the observation, and revising plan. The research findings could be seen from the observations, tests, and documents. In term of observation, the researcher observed the students’ activities during the action. The pre tests and posttests were given to know students’ grammar mastery before and after the actions. The mean score of three pre tests was 5.5, while the mean score of three posttests was 6.9. These findings were supported by documents evidence, namely; photos, diaries, students’ worksheets. Those showed that the students’ mastery of grammar improved. In addition, this action could be used to encourage the students to learn English. It showed that puzzles could improve the students’ grammar mastery.
