This research is aimed at finding out whether: (1) Diagnostic Approach is more effective than Comprehension Approach in teaching listening for the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo; (2) the students who have high self-esteem have better listening skill than those having low self-esteem of the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching approaches and students’ self-esteem to teach listening for the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo. This experimental study was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2013/2014. The population in this research is the seventh grade students of that school. The total number of population is 324 students coming from nine classes. The samples are VII I as the experimental class and VII H as the control class in which each consists of 36 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used test and questionnaire. Test is used to know the students’ listening skill and questionnaire is used to classify students into two groups: the students who have high self-esteem and those who have low self-esteem. After the normality and homogeneity tests were conducted, the hypotheses test was done. The data were analyzed by using Multifactor analysis of variance ANOVA 2x2 and Tukey test. The result of the research reveals that: (1) Diagnostic Approach is more effective than Comprehension Approach to teach listening; (2) the students who have high self-esteem have better listening skill than those who have a low self-esteem; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching approaches and selfesteem in teaching listening. In conclusion, Diagnostic approach is an effective approach for teaching listening to the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Ponorogo in the academic year of 2013/ 2014. The use of Diagnostic Approach can improve the students’ achievement in listening. It also gives opportunity to the students to be more active in solve the problems found in listening themselves.
