STEEL LATHE WASTE AS AN ALTERNATIVE MATERIAL TO IMPROVE CONCRETE STRENGTH (Limbah Bubut Baja Sebagai Alternatif Bahan Penguat Beton)

ABSTRACT The study aims to determine the effect of adding steel lathe waste to the value of slump, determine the effect of adding steel lathe waste to flexural strength of concrete, knowing the increasing of compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete due to the addition of steel lathe waste in different levels, and determine the optimum addition levels of steel lathe waste on the flexural strength of concrete. This study used an experimental method in the laboratory of Faculty of Training and Teacher Education Program and Building Engineering Materials and Structures Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering UNS by adding variety to the mix of waste steel lathe for normal concrete. The addition of a steel lathe waste variation with levels of 0% to 2.5% of the cement weight. The quality of concrete planned with mix design system = 20 MPa. Preparation of the samples consisted of 24 samples for compressive strength and flexural strength of 24 samples, the sample testing is done at 28 days of manufacture. The results of the study, increasing the quantity of steel lathe waste cause: the slump value decrease with average 0.5 cm; increasing the compressive strength of concrete by an average of 27.83% of the ordinary concrete. But the compressive strength levels decreased after the quantity of steel lathe waste = 1.9% by weight of cement. While the flexural strength of concrete increased 43.26 % of normal levels. And after the quantity of steel lathe waste = 1.9 %, the flexural strength of concrete was declining. This study was obtained from the optimum levels of variation steel lathe waste addition of 1.8 % by weight of cement. Keywords: steel lathe waste, slump, compressive strength, flexural strength
