Roger Chillingworth’s Motivation In Seeking Revenge As Reflected In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter

Revenge is one of issues raised by an author in literary work. Roger Chillingworth takes an important role in the existence of revenge issue in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. This study focuses on Roger Chillingworth’s revenge. It aims to find out the motivation and the effect of Roger Chillingworth for seeking revenge. The source data of the study was a novel of Nathaniel Hawthorne entitled The Scarlet Letter published by Washington Square Press in 1968. The main data were taken from the source of data that implied Roger Chillingworth’s revenge regarding on its motivation, the manifestation and the effect of revenge. It was read and selected comprehensively. The main data were studied based on the supporting data which were taken from books, articles, essays, critics and other related writings. The thesis was a descriptive qualitative library research. It was studied using psychological approach to find out the motivation, the manifestation and effect of Roger Chillingworth’s revenge. From the analysis, it is found that the feeling of jealousy and dishonored reputation motivate Roger Chillingworth in seeking revenge. Then, Chillingworth manifests his revenge by doing verbal aggression and indirect aggression. The last finding is that revenge gives bad impact to both the doer and the target. Morally, revenge causes corruption in Chillingworth’s soul. Revenge also gives bad influence to Arthur Dimmesdale physically and psychologically.
