ABSTRACT
This research aimed at describing the process of interpreting in TV Show Penyegaran Rohani Kristen RCTI: Gospel Overseas Studio, examining the quality of the interpretation in form of accuracy, acceptability and fluency, and identifying the contribution of factors in the process of interpreting towards the quality of interpretation.
The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained by applying some methods, i.e. content analysis by observing the video, delivering questionnaire to the informants, and interviewing them. The data source is the sermon session of the TV Show Penyegaran Rohani Kristen RCTI: Gospel Overseas Studio, with the speech by Rev. John Hartman and the interpretation by Mrs. Mary Tambingon.
The findings of this study are composed as follows: from 247 data, 212 data (85, 04%) are accurate, 22 data (8, 09%) are less accurate, 13 data (15, 73%) are not accurate. It indicates that most data are interpreted accurately. In terms of acceptability, 216 data (78, 94%) are acceptable, 27 data (19, 43%) are less acceptable, 4 data (1, 16%) are not acceptable. It indicates that the most data are acceptable. While in terms of fluency, 205 data (82, 9 %) are fluently interpreted, 24 data (9,7 %) are less fluently interpreted, 18 data (7, 2 %) are not fluently interpreted. It indicates that most data are delivered fluently.
The findings show that the process of interpreting runs in non-editing live show based on the speakers’ utterances with no draft or text script. The interpreter makes improvisation in case she gets difficulties in listening to the speaker utterance. The result shows that the factors, both technical and non-technical give significant influence toward the quality of interpretation. The technical factors such as the proper stage setting, adequate sound system and interpreter properties gives positive impact to the interpreting activity. The intervention of the stage director gives negative impact to the accuracy of the interpretation and the naturalness of the interpreting process because the process is packed in half-entertainment show that is expected to attract more audiences rather than to focus on the quality of the interpreting result.
Non-technical factors involve the three components of interpreting process; speaker, interpreter, and audience. It is found that the same cultural background between the speaker-interpreter and the interpreter-audience plays significant role in succeeding the interpreting activity.
