The objective of this study is to identify whether or not English final test items for
the eleventh grade students are considered appropriate. The motive of the study is the
existing phenomenon in the teaching and learning process which emphasizes its
measurement through tests. The concern of the study is the appropriateness of multiple
choice items used in final test.
The study focuses on the description of the test items’ appropriateness in terms of
content and form based on quantitative data, especially the material suitability with the
syllabus and the construction of stem and alternatives on each item. The subject of the
study is the English final test items for the second semester of the Eleventh grade of SMA
Negeri 1 Magetan in the 2013/2014 academic year. The data were taken from 100
students in four classes. The appropriateness of the test items is analyzed using item
analysis technique. The analysis comprises three aspects i.e. index of discriminating
power, level of difficulty, and the effectiveness of distracters. Meanwhile, the material
suitability is done by matching the item’s indicator with the learning indicators which are
mentioned in the syllabus and the analysis on construction of the stem and alternatives is
based on several aspects given by experts.
The results of this study shows that 57.5% of the total items have a good level in
discriminating index, eighteen of the total items (45%) fulfilled satisfactory criteria in
difficulty level, 11 items had possessed the effective distracters (around 3-4 distracters
work), while the item’s indicator of 37 out of 40 items (92.5 %) are compatible with the
learning indicator mentioned in the syllabus, and in the construction aspect, 75% of the
total items possess a good stem and 82.5% of the total items are able to fulfill all the
aspects of good alternatives.
In Conclusion, the items used as final test in SMA Negeri 1 Magetan have good
quality in construction aspects, and the items’ compatibility with the syllabus. However,
some items are less effective viewed from the level of difficulty and the effectiveness of
the distracters aspect.
