2007. This research is conducted in order to observe the misspelling types occurring in English handwriting with the bottom up approach in the first year of elementary school as well as to identify why the English misspelling with this approach still occurs. This is a descriptive research, so the data are in the form of words taken from the English notebooks of the first year students in SDN. Tugu No. 48 Surakarta from the first until the second semester. The interview is also conducted to find out what causes the spelling problem. To collect these data, the purposive sampling technique is employed. The data analysis shows that there are five main categories of English misspelling types in handwriting with the bottom up approach. They are omission, addition, misordering, change, and complex case (the combination of the four types). Most of them are still divided into some sub subcategories. In addition, the data analysis shows that there are four causes of the English misspelling in the handwriting with the bottom up approach, such as first language interference, slip the pen misinterpretation, and problems in concentration and memorizing that unconsciously happens in writing process, and similar sound of the two different letters. It is suggested that the other researchers explore the similar research deeper in order to find out the more detail result related to the English misspelling in the handwriting with the bottom up approach. In addition, the result of this research is expected to give input to decrease the English misspelling problem in the handwriting with the bottom up approach for especially in the first year of elementary school.
