The sydney morning herald’s and the jakarta post’s Ideology in viewing Bali Bomb Case (Based on Discourse Semantics: A Comparative Study of Ideology)

ABSTRAK This is a descriptive qualitative research of ideology in The Jakarta Post’s and The Sydney Morning Herald’s reports on Bali bomb case based on discourse semantics approach. The research is conducted using reports on The Jakarta post’s website which was downloaded on November 11, 2002 and The Sydney Morning Herald’s website which was downloaded on November 19, 2002 as source of data. They were taken as the source of the data since both articles report the Bali bomb case. The first step in conducting the research was describing the data based on its structure and texture. Next, the data were interpreted on the level of field, tenor and mode in order to identify its ideology manifested in the texts. Then, the data were compared to find out how text structure and text texture reveal its manifested ideology. From the previous presentation, some conclusions are figured out. Ideology is showed by the configuration of register’s terms: field, tenor and mode. Sometimes, certain items of text structure and text texture can be used to identify an ideology. Though the two texts came from two different newspapers with different ideology background, both two texts imply the same ideology. Both two texts tend to be neutral in serving the reports on Bali bomb case. It can be seen from how the two texts structures were constructed. The Jakarta Post’s text structure, as well as Sydney Morning Herald’s, was conducted in news item genres. It can be appreciated as the neutrality from the two texts when the structures were constructed from some information served in normal presentation. Moreover, on the level of transitivity system, both two texts employ many material and verbal process.
