The use of process approach to improve students’ writing ability (A classroom action research at MTSN Kediri 1 in 2008/2009 academic year)

ABSTRACT The Use of Process Approach to Improve Students’ Writing Ability: A Classroom Action Research at MTsN Kediri 1 in 2008/2009 Academic Year. Thesis. Surakarta. English Education Department, Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, 2009. The objective of the research is to examine whether or not process approach can improve the students’ writing ability. Besides, the research is also designed to study how the process approach can be implemented effectively and how is the students’ response when it is implemented. The research was conducted at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri (MTsN) Kediri 1 Kota Kediri, East Java, from June 2008 to January 2009. This study is classroom action research which consists of four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of the research are forty five students of class VIII-C MTsN Kediri 1, consisting of 19 boy students and 26 girl students. The data were obtained from several techniques including test, observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis. To analyze the quantitative data, the researcher applied a descriptive statistics. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher applied constant comparative method. The findings reveal that the implementation of process approach is successful viewed from some dimensions. It improves (1) students’ mastery on recount text; (2) grammar; (3) developing ideas and content; (4) the teaching learning situation; (5) the students’ understanding about writing process; (6) vocabulary; (7) self-confidence; (8) students’ interest; and (9) self-awareness. Those improvements can be summarized into three main points: (1) improvement of students’ writing ability, (2) improvement of teaching learning situation, and (3) improvement of students’ personal competence. The research findings of this study imply that process approach is very important to improve students’ writing ability. Therefore, it is recommended that (1) the English teacher should apply process approach in order to provide good teaching learning situation; (2) the students should have more practice in writing; and (3) the institution should prepare place where the students feel comfortable in the teaching learning process.
