The Use of English in School Daily Life Conversation (A Case Study at SD Bright Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2014/2015)

ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe the use of English in
school daily life conversation at SD Bright Kiddie Ponorogo in the academic year
of 2014/2015; (2) to find out the difficulties faced by the students and teachers in
using English in school daily life conversation; (3) to find out the problem
solutions applied by teachers to solve the difficulties faced by the students and
teachers in using English in school daily life conversation.
The research was conducted at SD Bright Kiddie Ponorogo located at Jl.
Suromenggolo Ponorogo in October 2014-Juni 2015. The method used for the
research was case study. The data were collected through observation, interview,
document analysis, and video record. The data of this research were analyzed
through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
Firstly, the result of this study shows that habituating to speak English in
school daily life conversation gives significant effect to the students’ English skill,
especially speaking. Their speaking skill improves time by time. English as an
international language is introduced to the students slowly in a relaxing
atmosphere. The students become familiar with English and motivated to improve
their ability. Secondly, teachers use natural approach to support the students in
using English for their speaking. Teachers should create friendly atmosphere and
motivate the students to speak English. Thirdly, the difficulties of using English in
school daily life conversation come from students and teachers. The students’
difficulties are in English (Grammar, Pronunciation, Fluency, and Vocabulary)
and in their characteristics (students’ anxiety and self-confidence). In the other
hand, the difficulties faced by teacher are that some teachers aredifficult to speak
English caused by not graduated from English Department and the lack of
teachers’opportunity to monitorallstudents. The last point is related with the
solutions accomplished by teachers to overcome the difficulties. To overcome the
students’ difficulties, the teachersalways try to use English words in their speech,
support the students, and give the students much motivation to speak in English.
Meanwhile to cover the teachers’ difficulties, they share with other teachers, use
dictionary, and always try to speak English.
In conclusion, using English as a school daily life conversation is one
appropriate way to improve students’ English speaking. Therefore, it is suggested
to: (1) the students should practice speaking English more, both at school and at
home; (2) teachers should not only improve their ability to speak English well but
also should know the various strategies to improve the students’ ability to speak
English; (3) The school should provide available facilities and English training
regularly for the teachers in order to make their ability improve.
