The objectives of the research are to find out whether the implementation of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach can improve students’ speaking proficiency and to know what happens when CTL is implemented in speaking class. The problem highlighted in this research was the low speaking proficiency of the ninth year students of SMP Negeri 2 Ngadiluwih-Kediri 2008/2009 Academic Year. The research was conducted in the school from March 2008 to January 2009. He carried out two cycles in the research. Each cycle consists of a series of steps, namely identifying the problems, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting the result of observation, reflecting the result of observation, and revising the plan. In collecting the data, he used non observational technique that consists of questionnaires and interviews. The observational technique consists of observation, field notes, diaries, audio-video recordings and photograph. Having collected the data, he analyzed the data both qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method. The research derived the data through: comparing incident applicable to each category, integrating categories and their properties, delimiting the theory, and writing the theory. Through the result, it was found out that the implementation of CTL can improve the classroom situation and the students’ speaking proficiency. The improvement on the classroom situation was supported by data which covered the students’ participation, attendance, and enthusiasm during the teaching speaking activities. Quantitative data was analyzed to know the different mean of pre-test and post-test. The improvement on the students’ speaking proficiency was reflected from the mean progress of the students’ pre-test and post-test. The average of pre-test was 54.12 and it became 61.90 in the post-test conducted at the end of Cycle 2. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that students’ speaking proficiency could be improved through CTL. Therefore, it is recommended that (1) the teacher should apply the seven components of CTL in teaching speaking; and (2) the teachers need to improve their acquisition of knowledge about CTL through the collaboration with the other teachers.
