This research is aimed at revealing whether: (1) Concept Sentence is more effective than Free Writing to teach writing; (2) students who have high creativity have better writing skill than those having low one; and (3) there is interaction between teaching techniques and students’ creativity in teaching writing. This research involves three variables. Twi independent variables are teaching techniques (Concept Sentence Technique and Free Writing Technique) and students’ level of creativity. The dependent variable is writing skill. The research examines the effect of two independent variables on the dependent variable.
This experimental research was conducted at MAN Rejosari Kabupaten Madiun in the academic year of 2013/2014. The population of this research was the first grade students consisting of four classes or 112 students. Two of the four classes were taken as samples by using cluster random sampling. The data of the research were collected by using two kinds of tests, namely verbal creativity test and writing test. The two tests had been tried out first to know their readability before being used. The verbal creativity test was used to classify the students into two groups, i.e. the students who have high creativity and those who have low creativity. The writing test was used to identify the students’ writing skill. After conducting the normality and homogeneity test, the hypothesis test was carried out. The data of the writing test were analyzed by using 2 x 2 multifactor analysis of variance or ANOVA and Tukey test.
From the data analysis, there are some research findings that can be drawn. First, Concept Sentence is more effective than Free Writing to teach writing. Second, the students who have high creativity have better writing skill than those who have low creativity. Third, there is an interaction between teaching techniques and students’ creativity in teaching writing, in which Concept Sentence is more effective for students having high creativity.
According to the research findings, it can be concluded that Concept Sentence is an effective technique to teach writing and the level of creativity also influences the effectiveness of teaching techniques to teach writing to the first grade students of MAN Rejosari Madiun in the academic year of 2013/2014.However, in the implementation of the techniques, a teacher must consider about the students’ level of creativity. As proved in this research that creativity influences the students’ writing skill. By considering the students’ level of creativity, a teacher can choose the technique he/she uses properly to teach writing in order to improve the students’ writing skill.
