The use of authentic materials in teaching reading and its effects on students’ reading motivation (A Case Study on the Third Grade Studentsof SMA Muhammadiyah 1 KaranganyarinAcademicYear 2014/2015)

The goals of this research are to describe (1) the use of authentic materials on teaching reading, (2) the problems and the solutions in using authentic materials, and (3) the effects of theuse of authenticmaterialson students reading motivation in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar.This research was case study research. The datawere event, informant, and document.The techniques of data collection wereobservation, interview, and document analysis. The research took place in the class IPA 1 consisting 30 students. The results of the research are (1) the authentic materials whichis usually used by the teacher is in the form of printed materials which is usually taken from the internet. In choosing the materials, the teacher usually considers come criteria such as the topic and the difficult level of the text. (2)The problems of the use of authentic materials are thetimeconstrains and the students’ lack of vocabulary mastery. The solution offered by the teacher are building the students’ background knowledge or prior knowledge about the text, forming the students in a group discussion, helping the students, making an evaluation, (3) proper use of authentic materials give positive effects on students reading motivation. The students have positive task orientation, ego involvement, high aspiration, needs for achievement, goal-oriented, high perseverance and tolerance of ambiguity.
