ABSTRACT
The main objective of the research is to find whether (1) Numbered Head Together is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach speaking for the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar; (2) students having low anxiety have better speaking skill than those having high anxiety for the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ anxiety in teaching speaking.
This research applied an experimental study. The teaching methods are Numbered Head Together and Direct Instruction Method. Anxiety as the attributive variable was divided into low anxiety and high anxiety. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar in the academic year of 2014/2015. The students consisted of 432 students which were grouped into twelve classes; nine classes of exact students and 3 classes of social students. The samples were taken by using cluster random sampling. The research samples were two classes which were taken randomly from exact students. They were XI MIA 4 consisting of 36 students as experimental class and XI MIA 7 consisting of 36 students as control class. The data were collected using anxiety questionnaires and speaking test. The data were analyzed using: (1) descriptive statistics, normality, and homogeneity of the data; and (2) Factorial Design of Variance (ANOVA) test of 2x2 and Tukey test.
The result of data analysis show that: (1) Numbered Head Together is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach speaking; (2) Students having low anxiety have better speaking skill than those having high anxiety; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ anxiety to teach speaking, it means that Numbered Head Together is an effective method to teach speaking for the students having low anxiety and Direct Instruction Method is an effective method to teach the students having high anxiety. Thus, it is recommended to the teacher to implement Numbered Head Together in speaking class since this teaching method is able to enhance the students speaking performance and able to encourage them to be more active in the class. However, for the next researchers who want to conduct the similar research, they can use this research as a reference.
