An Analysis of Translation Techniques and Quality of Collocations In the Novel Eniitled The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Rings

ABSTRAK
This research is conducted by analyzing lexical collocation found in novel The Lord of The Rings: Fellowship of The Ring and its translated version in Bahasa Indonesia. The aims of this research are: (1) to describe translation techniques applied by translator in translating collocation, (2) to describe the impact of translation techniques to translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability and readability. This research belongs to qualitative-descriptive research. The source data are document: book one of novel entitled The Lord of The Rings: Fellowship of The Ring and its translated version entitled Sembilan Pembawa Cincin and informants: raters and respondents who assessed the translation quality. The methods of data collection are content analysis, questionnaire, and interview. The analysis indicates that there are 27 types of translation technique applied by translator. These types of translation technique are applied in single technique and multiple techniques. The single technique are: 1) amplification (4 data or 1.58%), 2) established equivalent (154 data or 60.87%), 3) generalization (3 data or 1.19%), 4) literal (23 data or 9.09%), 5) modulation (4 data or 1.58%), (6) particularization (1 data or 0.4%), 7) reduction (7 data or 2.77 %) and 8) transposition (13 data or 5.14%). Meanwhile, the rest of data are translated by applying multiple techniques. The findings show that in aspect of accuracy there are 233 (92%) data categorized as accurate translation, 17 (6.7%) data are categorized as less accurate translation and 3 (1.3%) data are categorized as inaccurate translation. In aspect of acceptability there are 238 (94.1%) data categorized as acceptable translation and 15 (5.9%) data are categorized as less acceptable translation. In aspect of readability there are 234 (92.5%) data categorized as readable translation and 19 (7.25%) data are categorized as less readable translation. In this research established equivalent technique is the most dominant technique applied by translator. The result of analysis shows that application of established equivalent technique gives positive effect to translation quality. Out of 154 data, there are 149 accurate translations, 147 acceptable translations and 147 readable translations. This technique is properly used in translating collocation. By applying established equivalent, translator translates collocation from ST into equivalence and common collocation in TT. Therefore the meaning of collocation is delivered well, translation sounds natural and easy to be understood by the reader. Other techniques both single and multiple techniques also gives positive effect. Meanwhile, there are only two techniques which produce inaccurate translation. They are modulation and deletion techniques. Overall, translator applied proper techniques in translating lexical collocation found in novel The Lord of The Rings: Fellowship of The ring.
