A translation analysis of sexual terms in the film “american pie 3 (the wedding)” DVD version (unrated)

This research focuses on the translation analysis of sexual terms in the film of “American Pie 3 (The Wedding)” DVD Version (unrated). This study aims to find out the types of sexual terms, the strategies employed by the translator to translate the sexual terms, and the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research belongs to descriptive-qualitative research and applies descriptive method. This research is designed as single embedded-case study. To collect the data, the researcher applied total sampling technique. While in choosing the raters, the researcher applied purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained by using content analysis and questionnaire. In content analysis, the researcher collected the data by selecting dialogue in the film which contain lexical sexual connotation. There are 149 data in the research. The researcher employed close and open-ended questionnaire distributed to three translation experts. The research findings show that there are seven types of sexual terms found in the film “American Pie 3 (The Wedding)” DVD version (unrated); they are: sexual terms referring to sex organs (53 data or 35.6%), sexual terms referring to sex acts (59 data or 39.6%), sexual terms referring to person and his/her characteristics (31 data or 20.8%), sexual terms referring to sex equipments (2 data or 1.3%), sexual terms referring to sexual physiological processes (2 data or 1.3%), sexual terms referring to genital secretions (1 datum or 0.7%), and sexual terms referring to sex arts (1 datum or 0.7%). In regard with translation strategies, the researcher found ten strategies including translation using word/phrase of similar referential and expressive meanings (45 data or 30.2%), translation using word/phrase of similar referential but dissimilar expressive meaning (44 data or 29.5%), translation using word/phrase of dissimilar referential and expressive meaning (4 data or 2.7%), translation using more general word (superordinate) (3 data or 2.0%), translation using loan word plus explanation (1 datum or 0.7%), translation using loan word (7 data or 4.7%), translation using loan word and abbreviation (2 data or 0.7%), translating using partial substitution (1 data or 0.7 %), translation using omission (20 data or 13.4%), and translation using swearing word (22 data or 14.8%). In regard with translation accuracy, the result is as follows: translation that is accurate (131 data or 88%), less accurate (12 data or 8%), inaccurate (6 data or 4%). The average of the mean for accuracy is 1.3 meaning that the translation is accurate. In regard with translation acceptability, the result is as follows: translation that is very acceptable (135 data or 90.6%), acceptable (9 data or 6%), less acceptable (5 data or 3.4%), and there is no translation which is not acceptable. The average of the mean for acceptability is 1.2 meaning that the translation is very acceptable. The researcher recommended that the translator should know the real context of the situation of the film and consider thoroughly what should be rendered and what should be left out. It is recommended that other researchers explore translation of sexual terms with deeper study of readability. This research is expected to be able to be used as an additional knowledge and reference for the students, lectures, other researchers, and subtitlers, especially for those who are interested in translation study.
