Improving students’ vocabulary mastery through demonstration (A Classroom Action Research on the Third Grade Students of SD Negeri Bayem Taman, Kartoharjo, Magetan in Academic Year 2008/2009)

This research is a classroom action research. This classroom action research was conducted on the third grade students of SD Negeri Bayem Taman Magetan for academic year 2008/2009. The objective of this research is to know whether the implementation of demonstration technique is able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery or not. In this research, the writer only focuses the vocabulary mastery on meaning and pronounciation. The action hyphotesis of this research is that the implementation of demonstration technique is able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the writer used observation, interview, and test. In analysing the date, the writer investigates the field notes of observation and compares the students’ score in the pre-test and post-test. The writer was the teacher and her partner was the observer in the implemenation of demonstration-teaching technique. The result of the observation was served as field notes. While the test was conducted in the beginning and in the end of each cycle. The result of the research shows that demonstration teaching technique can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It captured the students’ attention. It also improved the students’ participation in learning vocabulary. The students were more active in the process of teaching and learning vocabulary. It made the students easier in mastering vocabulary. Furthermore, the students’ vocabulary achievement during the research was better than their previous vocabulary achievement. In addition, their vocabulary’s mean score in the first cycle was 67.93 and improved to 79.32 in the second cycle.
