The Implementation of Scientific Approach in English Teaching in SMP N 1 Boyolali (A Qualitative Research on the 8th Grade Students in SMP N 1 Boyolali 2014/2015 Academic Year)

ABSTRACT

The shift of curriculum brings some speculation on Indonesian education where each lesson should implement Scientific Approach. This research aims to describe the implementation of Scientific Approach in English teaching and learning activity, to investigate the effect of Scientific Approach towards student’s participation in English language teaching, and to describe the difficulties being faced by the teacher on teaching English by using Scientific Approach at the 8th grade students of SMP N 1 Boyolali , 2014/2015 academic year.

The research is conducted through descriptive qualitative method with 8th grade students of E Class and the English teacher as the research participants. Data are collected through interview, observation and document analysis and the technique of analyzing data are collecting, reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusion.

The result shows that the teacher has implemented the five stages of Scientific Approach starting from observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating but there are still some shortcomings in observing and communicating steps that emerged during its application. The students participate actively during teaching learning activity. They have high willingness to compete and learn new things. The difficulties faced by the teacher are the adaptation to the new curriculum, time management, questioning stage and the difficulty on operating technology.

It could be concluded that  the implementation of Scientific Approach in SMP N 1 Boyolali has been good but not optimal. Therefore, both the teacher and the government must work harder so that teaching learning activity can run as expected.
