Abstrak


The Please (Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, End) Strategy: Its Effectiveness on Students’ Writing Skill From the Perspective of Students’ Linguistic Intelligence (An Experimental Study at the Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak in the Academic Year of 2015/2016)

This research is aimed to reveal whether: (1) PLEASE Strategy is more effective than Guided Writing Strategy to teach writing; (2) The students with high linguistic intelligence have better writing skill than those having low linguistic intelligence; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ linguistic intelligence.

This experimental research was conducted at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak in the academic year of 2015/2016. From nine classes, the researcher took two classes as the sample, namely experimental class which was taught by using PLEASE Strategy and control class which was taught by using Guided Writing Strategy. To find out the sample, a cluster random sampling was implemented. Each class was divided into two groups of which each consisted of students who have high linguistic intelligence and those who have low linguistic intelligence. To gain the data, two instruments were used. Those were writing test to find out the score of students’ writing skill and verbal-linguistic intelligence test to find out the score of students’ linguistic intelligence. The data were, then, analyzed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance ANOVA 2x2 and Tukey Test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, pre-requisite test such normality and homogeneity test were conducted.

There are some research findings which can be taken: (1) PLEASE Strategy is more effective than Guided Writing Strategy to teach writing; (2) The students with high linguistic intelligence have better writing skill than those having low linguistic intelligence; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ linguistic intelligence in teaching writing.

Based on the results of this research, it implies that PLEASE Strategy is an effective strategy in teaching writing to the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak. However, to support the using of PLEASE Strategy which focuses on mnemonic device in process of writing, a teacher is recommended to combine this strategy with any teaching tools and media, so it will make an interesting atmosphere during the process of teaching writing in the classroom.
