A translation analysis of proper names in the novel sherlock holmes: a study in scarlet

ABSTRAK
This is a descriptive qualitative research. This research aims to describe the translation of proper names in the novel Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet. There are two kinds of data in this research. The first data are all the proper names found in the novel and the second data are the scores collected from the informants.
The objectives of the research are to find out the kinds of proper names, the strategies applied by the translator, and the impacts of the strategies on the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
The results of this research show that there are 248 data of proper names found in the novel. They are classified into ten groups. They are 55 personal names (22.18%), 11 titles (4.44%), 92 geographical names (37.09%), six dates (2.42%), 19 religious terms (7.66%), four newspaper names (1.61%), nine nationalities (3.63%), ten subjects (4.03%), six art works names (2.42%), and 36 other names (14.52%).
The translator employs strategies of exoticism, cultural borrowing, calque, communicative translation, addition, and deletion. The most frequently used strategy is exoticism, which cover 59.27% of all the data.
The degree of accuracy of the translation is high. There are 233 data or 93.95% of all the data considered to be accurate. They are resulted from the strategies of exoticism (146 data, 62.66%), cultural borrowing (48 data, 20.60%), calque (28 data, 12.01%), communicative translation (4 data, 1.72%), and addition (7 data, 3%).
Meanwhile, the acceptability level of the translation is not too high. There are only 95 data or 38.31% of all the data considered to be acceptable. They are resulted from the strategies of exoticism (25 data, 26.32%), cultural borrowing (35 data, 36.84%), calque (21 data, 22.11%), communicative translation (4 data, 4.21%), addition (4 data, 4.21%), and deletion (6 data, 6.32%).
Considering the research findings, it can be concluded that choosing the appropriate strategies in translating proper names is important. It will play a great role in producing accurate and acceptable translation for readers.
