Translation analysis of passive voice sentences in the book outline of us government and its Indonesian version

ABSTRAK
This study focused on the analysis of quality specifically in the accuracy and the strategy applied in the passive voice sentences translation in the book Outline of US Government. The purposes of this study were to discover the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and also the strategy in translating them.
This study was a descriptive qualitative research where the researcher only described all the facts on the existed data. The data were taken from the book Outline of US Government and the Indonesian version by means of purposive sampling. There were 158 data applied in this research. In order to obtain precise result on the quality of translation, questionnaires were distributed to the raters to define the accuracy of the translation.
The result of the study shows that 60,76 % of the data are accurate translation, 30,38 % of the data are less accurate translation and there are 8,86 % of the data that included in inaccurate translation. The total mean is 1,9; meaning that the translation of passive voice sentences in general is relatively accurate Meanwhile, the translation strategies identified in the translation are addition (5 data), subtraction (5 data), shifts (20 data), borrowing (9 data), deletion (8 data), modulation (2 data), literal translation (84 data), free translation (13 data), addition and shift (2 data), addition and borrowing (3 data), deletion and shift (3 data), deletion and borrowing (3 data), shift and borrowing (1 datum).
The outcome of this research concludes that the translation of passive voice sentences is relatively good although some rewritings are needed in some parts. Meanwhile, dealing with the strategy, it is suggested that the translators lessen the usage of literal translation which only focuses on the form and structure instead of the content of the text.
