The translation analysis of personal reference in ernest hemingway’s short story entitled the gambler, the nun, and the radio and its Indonesian version

ABSTRAK This research is designed to describe the personal references in the short story The Gambler, The Nun, and The Radio and to depict the accuracy of the translated text. The data source of this research is the whole text of The Gambler, The Nun, and The Radio, written by Ernest Hemingway and its translation version by Ursula Gyani Buditjahja. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data were taken based on purposive sampling. Hence, they were selected purposively corresponding to the research objectives. The data consisted of personal references. The first step in conducting the research was determining and classifying the personal reference collected. The classification is based on the strategy used by the translator and the accuracy of the translation. There are five strategies mentioned: literal translation, deletion, structural adjustment, shifting grammatical cohesion into lexical cohesion, and the application of demonstrative reference and Noun+demonstrative reference. The second classification is dealing with the accuracy of translation. There are four items used: most accurate, accurate, less accurate and non accurate. The next step is analysis the data gained. The researcher used questionnaires to assess the accuracy of translation. It is given to three raters who have capabilities in translation. The last step is making conclusion. The results of the analysis show that shifting grammatical cohesion into lexical cohesion mentioned in 34,44 % of the data. It is divided into three forms; 24,44 % (22 cases) of general noun, 5,55 % (5 cases) of collocation, and 4,44% (4 cases) of translation by proper name. 32, 22 % literal translation used by the translator. It is divided into two forms; 20,00% (18 cases) apply free morpheme and the usage of enclitics reach 12.22% (11 cases). 14,44 % for structural adjustments, deletion applied in 12 cases (13,33 %)and the application of demonstrative reference placed 5,55 % of the strategy. The analysis of second problem statements results 94,4% (85 cases) categorizes as most accurate translation, 3,33% (3 cases) is accurate translation and 1,11% ( one case) less accurate and not accurate also 1,11% ( one case). This thesis is expected to give a significant contribution to some other researchers and students who learn translation.
