ideology and to figure out the similarities and differences of each
text based on Systemic Functional Linguistics approach.
The interpretation of register explores three aspects, namely field, tenor, and mode. The interpretation of field shows that both texts positively have the same issue concerning the outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1 virus) pandemic, especially in Asian countries. In a sense of tenor analysis, both texts have different features. The degree of relationship between the writer and the readers in the text I is unequal, while the status of the writer to the inside participants is equal. Meanwhile, text II employs the contrary. It has equal or horizontal status between the writer and the readers, while unequal status occurs between the writer and the inside participants. The contact illustrates that the readers in both texts are uninvolved and that all texts have high readability. The analysis of mode further sign that the language style of both texts belongs to spoken-written in which appropriates to the medium, The Jakarta Post newspaper.
Text I employs Hortatory Exposition genre. The GSP shows that the text comprises of Thesis – Argument I – Argument II. The text concerns the subject matter of avian influenza virus becoming lethal threat around the globe. As well, Text II is Hortatory Exposition genre. The GSP shows that the text comprises of Thesis – Argument – Recommendation I – Elaboration of The Argument – Recommendation II. The text illuminates that the bird flu has been taking roost in Indonesia.
The ideology of the two opinion texts can be figured out through the interpretation of register, and genre. The occurrence of one point of view in both texts that rejects the existence of bird flu disease implies that the writers have Left Ideology.
