Singular-plural nouns mastery of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri I Gondangrejo-Karanganyar in the academic year 2006/2007 (a descriptive study)

ABSTRAK
This study is intended to find out the present students’ mastery of singular-plural nouns and to find out which nouns are the most difficult for the students.
The population of this study is the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gondangrejo-Karanganyar in the academic year 2006/2007. By using simple random sampling, 40 out of 245 students is taken as the sample.
To collect the data, an objective test is applied. The number of test items is 50, which are categorized into four, namely Singular Uncountable Nouns, Singular Countable Nouns, Regular Plural Nouns, and Irregular Plural Nouns. The data analysis is done by counting the students’ answers, counting the percentage, and classifying them into some levels. Finally, the data analyzed before are crossed check with the students’ incorrect answers.
As the result, the students are able to answer 41.65% of the test items correctly. The number of the students’ correct answers is 833 out of 2000 total answers. In specification, the students’ correct answers for each noun are 1) 44.38% for Singular Uncountable Nouns, 2) 41.25% for Singular Countable Nouns, 3) 47.86% for Regular Plural Nouns, and 4) 30% for Irregular Plural Nouns.
Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that 1) the singular-plural nouns mastery of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gondangrejo in academic year 2006/2007 is “poor” and 2) among the four noun categories, Irregular Plural Nouns are identified as the most difficult for the students in learning singular-plural nouns.
