ABSTRAK This thesis is in the frame of American study which attempts to analyze the problems through interdisciplinary study. The researcher takes the issue on gays’ struggle to get equal rights of protection and the enjoyment of marriage among them in Vermont state as the subject matter of this thesis. The analysis is focused on the backgrounds which bear the marriage approval from the government of Vermont among gays. In accordance with the problems, the objective of this study is to find out the background of the marriage approval among gays in Vermont by the state of Vermont issued on April 26, 2000. In order to achieve the goal of this research, the researcher applies 5 different approaches from different point of views. They are , psychological, medical, religious, socio-cultural, and law approaches. In the analysis, the writer uses interdisciplinary approaches in order to explain completely toward the subject discussed. Psychological approach is used to know the psychology of gays in their life and later supports the government to approve their marriage. Religious approach is used to know the religious practitioners opinion and arguments against the marriage approval and this approach is also to find out the religious point of view toward gays’ activity and life. Medical approach is used to find out whether gays’ behavior is healthy or unhealthy which supports the approval of their marriage. Socio-cultural approach is used to know the opinions and responses of Vermont society against gays and their marriage approval. Law approach is used to find out the Vermont law background which supports marriage approval among gays As the result of this research, the stereotypical and prejudices against gays were not true and has no rational basis. Based on psychological background, nothing is wrong to be found in homosexuality. Based on religious background, the marriage among gays is in form of civil marriage and it is not a religious marriage so that the state has power to approve the marriage. Based on medical background, nothing dangerous or unhealty in gays’ behaviors. The society of Vermont always respect the right regardless of sexual orientation. Therefore, the people of Vermont respect to the approval of marriage among gays by the state of Vermont. Based on Vermont law , the state of Vermont is one of 11 ststes in USA which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and Vermont law guarantee all citizens of Vermont state to achieve any right. From those factors above, the state of Vermont has strong power to approve the marriage among gays. The marriage approval is issued on April 26, 2000 by the state of Vemont, USA and it is the glorious victory day for gays in vermont.
