The research focuses on the translation of utterances used by the characters in the novel "e-love" by Caroline Plaisted and its translation by Sutanty Lesmana. The aims of the research are to describe the strategies used in translating the utterances from English into Bahasa Indonesia, to know the accuracy of the translation of the utterances and to know the readability of the translation for its reader.
This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method. There are three data in this study. The first data are the utterances taken from the novel entitled "e-love" by Caroline Plaisted and its translation by Sutanty Lesmana. The second data are the result of the evaluation of translation accuracy given by three raters, and the third data are the result of the evaluation on the readability of the translation given by twenty respondents. The theory of Suryawinata and Newmark are used in finding the strategies used in translating the utterances used for chatting in the novel "e-love". To know the accuracy, the researcher interprets it by analyzing their comments and suggestions. To know the readability, the researcher interprets the data given by twenty respondents who are the target reader of the novel.
The result of the analysis shows that among the five strategies used, there is one data uses omission, 81 data use modulation, five data use borrowing, six data use synonymy, one data uses descriptive equivalence, 14 data use modulation and borrowing, one data uses descriptive equivalence and modulation, and there are three data left untranslated. The level of accuracy of the utterances used for chatting in the novel is high; there are only few utterances that are not well translated. The readability level of the utterances used for chatting on the Internet in this book is high, even though there are some words that the target reader cannot understand them.
