When we are dealing with popular literature, such as the work of Rick Riordan, which is also very popular in Indonesia, it is difficult to apply the traditional collection of humanistic discipline to examine the unique achievement of the individual writer because in some sense his work is considered as collective. The concept widely used to study popular literature is, for example the analysis of formula. Formula is a conventional system which structures the cultural product. Formula represents synthesis of several important cultural values. All cultural products contain a mixture between conventions and inventions. The writer continues to apply the familiar shared images and meanings to the readers to assert the ongoing continuity of values. However, at the same time the writer also attempts to confront the readers with the new perception, such as presenting the dyslexic child as the hero. This paper will discuss the game dimension of convention and invention of cultural values which produce complex perception of life that students are able to find new ways of viewing such values.
