Background: Menstrual pain is a medical condition occurs during menstruation, characterized by pain in the abdomen or pelvic area (Judha et al, 2012). In Indonesia, it is reported that around 55% of woman in childbearing age experiencing mentrual pain (Proverawati, 2009). Relaxation breathing exercise is a common method which gives rise to a sense of comfort and relaxation. These relaxed feelings and sense of comfort will eventually improve someone’s tolerance to pain (Kozier, 2004). The research aims to observing whether relaxation breathing exercise might reduce menstrual pain of students at Diponegoro Islamic High School in Surakarta.
Methods: This research was performed using pre-experimental approach of one group pre-post test design. The actual population in this study is the students of Diponegoro Islamic High School of Surakarta who have history of menstrual pain. The sampling technique used in this study is total sampling technique, involving 43 respondents as samples. Data analysis was conducted using Wilcoxon with error level of 5%.
Result: The p-value is 0.000 (p ‹ 0.05), suggesting that there was an effect of relaxation breathing exercise against menstrual pain at Diponegoro Islamic High School of Surakarta.
Conclution: There is influence of deep breathing relaxation against menstrual pain at SMA Islam Diponegoro Surakarta.
