ABSTRACT

This research analyzed the address forms in the films Sixteen Candles and The DUFF. The analysis was aimed at identifying the types of address forms and the comparison and contrast of the use of address forms in both films.
This is a descriptive qualitative research, using a sociolinguistics approach. The data in this research are all of address forms in the films Sixteen Candles and The DUFF. There are 141 data in Sixteen Candles and 123 data in The DUFF which were analyzed by using Wardhaugh’s (2006) classification.
The result shows that the address forms found in 1980s film Sixteen Candles are first name (FN), nickname (N), title (T), last name (LN), kinship term (KT), pet name (PN), familiarizers (F), and term of insult (TI). Meanwhile, the address forms found in 2010s film The DUFF are first name (FN), nickname (N), title (T), title plus last name (TLN), kinship terms (KT), pet name (PN), familiarizers (F), and term of insult (TI).
The use of address forms in Sixteen Candles and The DUFF is mostly similar. Different uses of address forms in both films are mainly caused by the different context such as who, where, when, to whom the address form is used, and the intention or purpose of utterance. However, there is a different use of address form dude in both films. This language change indicates that the social norms in American society have changed from 1980s to 2010s.
