The Interpretation of Language Used by Men and Women in Sharing The Same Language Features in The Movie Titled Almost Friends: Sociolinguistics Study

ABSTRAK

This study purposes to investigate the differences between male and female characters in the movie titled Almost Friends in sharing the same language features. The descriptive qualitative research is used in order to examine the gender differences observed in the language use. More specifically, this present study analyzes what types of languages features used more by male characters, what is their representation of language use and what factors that could possibly influence them in selecting the language. The findings reveal that there are differences between female and male characters in the frequency of five language features which are tag questions, questions, lexical hedges, intensifiers and super polite forms. The result shows male characters are dominated in the use of four language features. There are also slightly differences in the function of language use by male and female characters. Several factors such as social distance, social status and the context of situation affect the characters in language use.
