The method used in the 1st grade of the new curriculum was eclectic method. The method is a combination between two methods. In SMP Negeri 2 Gemolong, the teacher used the method; those were direct method and grammar – translation method. In the class activities, the teacher classified it in some steps. The steps started from the brain storming, explanation, task and the test was the last step. The brain storming itself contained greeting, reviewing and warming up. In supporting the activity, the teacher used games sometimes. Some problems appeared as well during the activity in the class. The problems related to to the students were motivation and student’s interest. Other problems related to the school itself were facilities and references. Therefore, in accordance to the students’ proficiency, the teacher’s efforts to improve it were 1) she made lesson plan to prepare and to allocate the time effectively before taught, 2) she gave the students a chance to ask, 3) she gave the students assignments.
