This thesis is written based on the analysis of the film Crooked Arrows released in 2012 directed by Steve Rash and starred by popular native American actor, Brandon Routh. It is aimed to explain how the movie depict the change of functions of native American Lacrosse sports as well as how the movie constructs the sport. The research is descriptive qualitative. As this is an American cultural studies research that stresses on interdisciplinary perspective, in answering the research questions, this research combines socio-cultural and historical approaches;and adopts three theories of semiotic theory by Roland Barthes, film theory by Villarejo, and the theory of sport as spectacle by Douglas Kellner. The source of data is the film Crooked Arrows.The main data are in the form of dialogue, mise-en-scene, and frame or shot. This research reveals that Lacrosse which has been part of native America tradition is now being commercialized and modernized. These aspects have made the team of Lacrosse forge about the value and the function of the sport as well as not being able to have an experience as what non-native have. The results of Commercialization and modernization in Lacrosse sport have made native American both the players as well as the spectators unaware about its history. Through the movie Crooked Arrows, the director intentionally wants to show to the audience that Lacrosse is the sport that belongs to native American and it needs to rediscover and appreciate for its history.
