Directive Speech Acts In The Movie Entitled High School Musical 1

This  research  was  conducted  to  determine  the  types  of  directive  speech  acts applied by the characters in the movie High School Musical 1 and to explore the politeness strategy used by the characters to employ the directives.

This research is based on a Pragmatic approach which focuses on directive speech acts. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. There are thirty-two dialogues containing directive speech acts in the movie High School Musical 1. Those are analyzed with the Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory.

There are two primary findings in this research. First, there are three types of directive speech acts applied by the characters involving advices, warnings, and instructions.

Second, the speaker employs various politeness strategies in delivering certain directives. The speakers utilize three types of politeness strategy to deliver advices involving bald on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness. In addition, the speakers use two types of politeness strategy to deliver warnings consisting of positive politeness and off record. Moreover, the speakers employ four types of politeness strategy to deliver instructions, namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record.
