A Pragmatic Analysis of Expressive Utterances Produced by The Characters in The Film Entitled Spirited Away

This research aims to: (1) find out the variability of expressive utterances in the film Spirited Away, (2) identify the illocutionary functions in the film Spirited Away, (3) propose the implementation of expressive utterances into teaching learning activies of Junior High School students, based on Searle’s theoretical framework.

The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method on utterances in the  film “Spirited Away” as the research object. The research data are obtained through observation done by the researcher by watching the film.

The research findings show that: First, there are seven expressive utterances found in the film Spirited Away. That is: sorrow 18.58%, surprise 25.72%, anger 21.43%, happiness 12.86%, thank 10%, apology 7.15%, and blame 4.29%, from the total data 70 utterances. Second, there are five types of linguistic found in the film Spirited Away, that is: declarative 36.85%, imperative 13.16%, interrogative 5.27%, interjection 26.32%, and ellipsis 18.43%, from the total 38 data. Third, there are 52 illocutionary functions from 28 data being observed.

The contribution of this research in English teaching learning activities is that the expressive utterances found in the film Spirited Away can be used as teaching material in the 7th grade of Junior High School students with curriculum 2013.  Expressive utterances can also be implemented on the interaction between teacher and students in the classroom or outside the class.
