Enhancing Students’ Participation In English Class Through Small Group Discussion (A Classroom Action Research in Tenth Grade RPL B SMK N 2 Karanganyar in Academic Year 2016/2017)

Abstrak

The objectives of this research are (1) to describe whether the implementation of group discussion can improve students’ participation in English class, and to find out how far the improvement can be achieved,and (2) to identify the strengths and weaknesses in implementing group discussion in the English class during this research.
    This action research study was carried out to improve students’ participation in English class through group discussion. This research was conducted on SMK Negeri 2 Karanganyar; the subjects of the research were tenth grade students of RPL B in the academic year 2016 – 2017. In collecting data, the researcher used observation, field notes, interview, questionnaire, and test. Analyzing quantitative dataapplied descriptive statistics. While to analyze qualitative data, applied constant comparative method. The research consisted of two cycles, with three meetings in each cycle. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection.
    The research finding showed that group discussion could improve students’ participation in English class in terms of: (1) Ability to follow directions and norms; (2)Ability to convey and defend own ideas; (3) Ability to listen what others saying (pay attention); (4) Ability to elaborate questions, answers, and comments; (5) Ability to contribute confidently; (6) Ability to cooperate with others; and (7) Ability to initiatively involve in discussion.Along with the improvement of students’ participation, there were also improvement of students speaking ability in aspects of pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary. However some problems also encountered in the implementation of this technique as follows: (1) group discussion demanded more time; (2) an individual dominated in the discussion; (3) distraction from outside classroom.
    This research shows that group discussion is very essential in improving students’ participation in English class. It can be seen from the improvement of students’ participation along with the improvement of students’ speaking skill. However, there also found some problems encountered in the implementation of group discussion. This technique can be applied alternatively to improve students’ participation and speaking ability in speaking class.
